As part of the UNIDO project "Urban Mining Opportunities in Ukraine: Capacity Building for 50 Communities in Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv Regions," implemented under the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany)-funded project "Green Industrial Recovery through Municipal Development in Ukraine," Acting Director of the Municipal Enterprise "MCWM" of the Kharkiv City Council, Vladyslav Danylov, presented the Kharkiv City Territorial Community’s achievements in construction and demolition waste management.
During the event, representatives of UNIDO and territorial communities from the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv regions were introduced to Kharkiv’s practical experience in managing construction and demolition waste. Participants visited waste storage and recycling sites where debris generated by hostile shelling of the city is processed, gaining first-hand insight into the organization of the waste management system.
Vladyslav Danylov outlined the processes of sorting, processing, and recycling materials recovered from the demolition of apartment buildings damaged by hostile attacks. He also presented modern approaches to construction and demolition waste management that are already being implemented in Kharkiv.
Particular attention was given to the integration of Urban Mining and circular economy principles, which promote the maximum reuse of resources, the minimization of landfill disposal, and the development of effective mechanisms for restoring urban infrastructure. Participants learned how construction materials recovered through waste recycling can be returned to economic use and utilized in reconstruction efforts.
The experience of the Kharkiv City Territorial Community demonstrated the practical application of innovative construction and demolition waste management solutions and highlighted the importance of cooperation among local communities, international partners, and experts in supporting the sustainable and green recovery of Ukraine.
